Why YOU Should Do Pilates!

  • Pilates exercises focus on proper body alignment while executing weight-bearing movements that are essential for preventing further bone loss. The exercises increase strength and muscle mass, which helps to support our bones. Because Pilates exercises combine strengthening and stretching, they can promote improved quality of movement in everyday activities.

  • Pilates strengthens your core, including the muscles of your shoulders, back, pelvis and abdomen. This can lead to better posture and alignment, which allows the body to move and function with greater ease. Misalignment and poor posture can contribute to compression of the joints and organs, along with tight and imbalanced muscles.
  • Core strengthening through Pilates improves stability and balance. This in turn helps to prevent falls that can lead to fractures. Pilates sessions require being present. The mind should remain focused on the exercises to ensure they are done correctly, with an emphasis on breathing. Studies have shown that Pilates  decreases pain, improves quality of life, boosts mood and decreases stress.

  • While a number of traditional Pilates mat exercises aren’t appropriate for those with Osteoporosis, there are safe ways to modify many of them. Adding this specialized Pilates mat program 2-3 times per week is an excellent and effective resource for anyone with Osteoporosis or Osteopenia.

About the Instructor!

Linda’s career in fitness began back in 1985, when she first began teaching group exercise classes to

balance the stress of her “real” job—teaching kindergarten. She later transitioned to working in the fitness

industry full time, teaching classes and managing the program at a local health club. She eventually

discovered Pilates and found this method to be her true passion. While she works with a wide range of

clients, she has found her niche to be teaching those with special conditions who need

modifications—like osteoporosis! She now teaches at a physical therapy studio, which gives her the

opportunity to apply these skills with their many patients. Linda completed her Pilates coursework through

Balanced Body, with additional training through Peak Pilates and Stott Pilates. She is also a YogaFit

instructor, a Rossiter Stretching coach, and a Breast Cancer Exercise Specialist through the Pink Ribbon Program.
