Osteoporosis and Proper Posture

With osteoporosis, good posture is important when sitting, standing and performing daily tasks because it will better protect your spine and help prevent fractures.

This article will teach you the difference between proper posture and poor posture so you can learn healthy habits.

Sitting Posture

When sitting, it is important to activate your core to maintain proper posture.  Your shoulders should be pulled back (push your chest out) and down (when stressed your shoulders tend to go up toward your ears).

In addition, your low back should be straight and not slouched.  Do not use the chair back as a guide because it is not always in a good spinal position.

Your feet should be hip width apart on the floor while sitting.  If you can adjust your chair, a proper height is when your upper thighs are parallel to floor.

Your head and neck should be in a neutral position and not forward.

Standing Posture

When you are standing, it is important to activate your core to maintain proper posture.  Your shoulders should be pulled back (push your chest out) and down (when stressed your shoulders tend to go up toward your ears).

Your hips should be in a neutral position.  Find this position by tilting your hips all the way forward and then all the way backward before resting in the middle position.

Head and neck should be in a neutral position and not forward.
