Resistance Bands vs. Weight Training for Osteoporosis

When treating osteoporosis, I prefer resistance band exercises over free weights or machines and wanted to let you know why!

Weight Training for Osteoporosis

Some of the obvious reasons bands are more beneficial than weights or machines are:

1. Bands are affordable

2. Bands travel well – no bulky equipment

3. Bands are great for use at home – easy storage

Some more reasons why I prefer bands comes from my experience as a physical therapist and are:

1. Patients have an easier time maintaining proper form and posture with bands opposed to weights/machines

2. Patients have smoother movement through full range of motion

3. Easier on joints for people with joint issues (ie. hypermobility, osteoarthritis, etc.)

4. Patients can increase and decrease the resistance easily by adding bands or putting more tension in the current band

5. There is no awkward positioning – no bending forward or twisting (ex. getting in and out of machines, no bending forward with weights to workout back etc.)

*** 6. Research has shown resistance bands to be as effective in building bone as weights or machines!

From a personal and professional standpoint, resistance bands are a great way to safely and effectively build bone at home! I am a big fan of them!
