A MAJOR cause of fractures in people with osteoporosis is FALLS.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to prevent falls.  Simple home modifications and improving strength, posture and BALANCE all contribute to decreased falls.  Decreased fall risk translates to decreased fracture risk. which is key!

In the article below, we will discuss what balance is and give you a few exercises to improve it.

What is Balance?

Balance involves three systems: the vestibular system (your inner ear), the visual system (seeing the position of your body, other objects, and motion) and the somatosensory system.

The somatosensory system is in charge of helping us know how movements of certain body parts influence other bodyfall prevention parts.

For example, when you are standing with your feet together and you reach forward for an object in front of you, your toes will curl to grip the floor in response to your weight shifting forward.  This is how your somatosensory system responds to your movement to maintain your balance.

As we age, the somatosensory system loses some of its ability to keep us balanced.  This decline can be due to decreased strength, decreased reaction time and decreased practice in using the somatosensory system.

The good news is that simple balance exercises can improve your body’s somatosensory system. Moreover, with balance and strengthening exercises, improved posture and good flexibility, you can achieve the best balance possible!!
